Verizon T1

Verizon T1 service is available nationwide through direct connections on its own fiber optic network in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, and through access lease agreements with all the regional / local carriers. Verizon is a full-service provider of T1 services, both on a local (possibly resale out of region) and on a long haul basis (using MCI's network).

Mergers Mean Business. Verizon T1 line offerings vary by business and consumer segment. With the pending merger with MCI, Verizon stands to extend its corporate customer base well beyond its current regional boundaries. Due to its size and pending MCI merger, Verizon stands to gain lots of T1 service business with companies that are primarily located outside of its current territory. Adding the national network reach of MCI is Verizon's benefit from the merger. Adding a significant wireless vendor, as well as local access in the largest region (based upon subscribers/mile) appears to be MCI's motivation.

T1s will not go away anytime soon, however, even with the wireless boom continuing. Business is constantly migrating from traditional voice and data networks, to converged IP-based networks. Access T1s to the carrier IP network (provided by Verizon/MCI) will continue to be a hot commodity as enterprise networks continue to combine services onto a single platform. For Verizon, adding VPN-based wireless access to the corporate network extends the reach of enterprise networks to the mobile workforce.

Verizon is considered a "tier one" T1 carrier. Tier one carriers are considered the old regional Bell operating companies (or what's left after mergers and consolidations) and the inter-exchange carriers. Recently, MCI and Verizon have announced plans for a merger, so there'll be one less company in that group.
