A Digital phone recorder allows you to record and store telephone conversations as a digital audio file. Several options are available to record telephone calls as digital audio files. One method is to interface the recording device directly to the handset cord on the telephone. This option allows digital phone recording of both parties to be recorded at the same time without interference from any ambient noise that may be present in the room while recording. (Sensitivity is based upon the telephone microphone)
Once the telephone conversation has been recorded on the portable digital recorder, some models offer the ability to interface directly to a PC for storage, email, or other file processing. Transfer to a PC can be accomplished either via a data cable or built-in USB interface on the recorder.
HelloDirect.com offers a wide range of digital telephone recording options. Storage options for the recorded files include directly to a digital handheld recorder (see this web page), or for permanent installations, record directly to a PC.
If a permanent installation is desired, the best way to accommodate a virtually unlimited amount of telephone recording is to record directly to a PC. Recording directly to a PC allows you to use a much larger storage location (hard drives up to 250GB) than portable flash-based digital recorders. Since you're recording a digital audio file (WMA format), the audio file can be easily transferred to a portable device (MP3 player) or sent as an email attachment to any destination. TelephoneRecording.com offers the Call Saver Pro package that includes Windows-based software for recording management, playback, archiving, and more for under $200.
Another Option for Occasional Use. Any common digital recorder with a microphone input can be adapted to telephone recording by using a "pickup" microphone that sticks to the telephone receiver using a suction cup. This specialty microphone ($7 at RadioShack) can be used for any digital or cassette-based recorder as it picks up the caller's voice by sensing vibrations in the telephone receiver.
Digital Phone Recorder Options. Most handheld digital recorders use the now-standard flash memory cards. Some models offer the ability to remove the smart media card and plug it directly into a pc for audio transfer, avoiding the need for a docking cradle or cable connection. Smart media storage cards are available from several manufacturers and are compatible with most digital cameras and flash-based MP3 players, so if you're a digital-gadget person, adding a handheld digital recorder to your arsenal of electronics won't force you to stray away from common storage formats.
