Cisco Memory

For every Cisco "box" that routes, switches, or computes something, Cisco memory is required. Memory is used to allow the device to "think", allowing multiple processes to occur at the same time. As opposed to processor speed, often, simply increasing RAM (Random Access Memory) will allow a router, server, switch or PC to operate much faster. Cisco's line of routers, switches, firewalls, and servers is no different. Several modules are available, either direct from Cisco, or from various retailers. For instance, the Cisco 2500 series router uses a 16mb Dram Memory chipset (Cisco part#MEM-1x16D) for under $25. As with any volume purchase, orders for more than 10 units begin to acquire volume discounted pricing.

Vendors we've found that stock (or represent distributors of) memory products for Cisco include:

  • Memorystock.com This online retailer is focused solely on memory applications.
  • Pacificcable.com conveniently lists memory offered by Cisco model number.
  • Satech.com lists memory by product series, so a couple of clicks and you can click through to the exact model you're shopping for
  • Anysystem.com lists memory upgrades by module type. Unless you know specifically what you're searching for, you'll have difficulty with this site
  • 18004memory.com lists memory by "kits", but they do notate that "This is a Cisco Approved Part fits XXX Series" so you can likely find the memory for Cisco you're looking for here as well.

Installing memory cards is not terribly difficult. As with all electronic chipsets, care should be taken to not force or physically damage any chips, connectors, clips or jumpers during the installation process. Further, installers should ensure that appropriate anti-static measures have been taken to prevent damage during the installation. Always install chipsets with all power to the unit removed (AC power, battery, UPS, etc). Follow Cisco's instructions on installation and configuration, as each installation will differ slightly from model to model.

About online purchases: Most people realize by now that there are several ways to get scammed by online retailers. Besides all that has been written, we'll offer one additional suggestion: Get a credit card for internet-only purchases with a spending limit that will allow you to make monthly purchases without giving you too much "headroom". If your number gets hijacked along the way, you simply cancel that card and use an alternate until the fraud is solved.
