AT&T T1

AT&T T1 Service is available nationwide through direct connections on its own fiber optic network in the United States, and locally through access lease agreements with all the regional / local carriers. AT&T is a full-service provider of T1 services, both on a local and on a long haul basis. ATT T1, though faced with stiff competition from carriers like MCI, Sprint, and the Regional Local Telephone carriers, has still retained the lead in market share in the US long distance (interlata) market.

AT&T's T1 service offerings (pre-SBC merger) include:

  • point-to-point private line
  • T1 access (via lease in most cases)
  • IP service access
  • Frame Relay access
  • local access (where available).

SBC's merger will serve to expand upon AT&T's ability to provide a complete line of T1 services, while network simplification measures over the next 18 months will benefit internal cost recovery.

Mergers Mean Business. AT&T's T1 offerings vary by business and consumer segment. With the pending merger with SBC, AT&T stands to extend its corporate customer base well beyond its current, through acquisition and penetration within SBC's local territory. AT&T stands to gain lots of T1 service business with companies that are primarily located inside of SBC's current territory. Adding the national network reach of AT&T is SBC's benefit from the merger. T1s will not go away anytime soon, however, even with the wireless boom continuing. Business is constantly migrating from traditional voice and data networks, to converged IP-based networks. Access T1s to the carrier IP network (provided by AT&T/SBC) will continue to be a hot commodity as enterprise networks continue to add VPN-based wireless access to the corporate network extends the reach of enterprise networks to the mobile workforce.
